Join Trevor Ring of Community Cultures for fermented fun! This season we’re bringing back our Intro to Fermented Veggies class as well as Pickled Garden Goods. If you haven’t joined Trevor for either of these intro classes, now is your chance! We’ve also added two new ferments to the line up! This semester we’ve added a fermented soybean paste workshop, better known as miso and a customizable fermented hot sauce workshop! Join us for just one class or sign up for all four! 

Are you interested in bringing more umami flavors to your cooking? Join this class to learn all about koji (a fundamental ingredient across Asian cuisine) and miso, a Japanese fermented bean paste. Participants will learn how to safely make miso using a variety of ingredients and learn how to make a classic Japanese miso soup in class. Come prepared to open your senses and expand your knowledge of fermentation.

Phipps Adult Education Policies

  • Cancellation Policy:
    • Contact edu@phipps.conservatory.org or 412-441-4442 ext. 3925 to cancel a class registration.
    • Up to two weeks before the class (or the first class date, for a multi-session class), you may receive a full refund minus a non-refundable $10 administrative fee.
    • Up to 72 hours (3 days) before the class or the first class date, you may receive a 50% refund.
    • Less than 72 hours (3 days) before the class or the first class date, there are no refunds.
    • Special events like conferences will have a separate cancellation policy and refund deadline.
  • Phipps Adult Education classes are for individuals 18 years of age and older. Minors over age 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is also a paid attendee of the class. Minors under age 16 are not permitted.
  • If you have a food allergy, please note any details at checkout, or check with the education department at edu@phipps.conservatory.org or 412-441-4442 before class with any questions. In-class adjustments may not be possible.
  • Phipps reserves the right to substitute instructors when necessary.
  • Mask and COVID-19 Policy: Masks are welcomed in the Botany Hall Kitchen space, but not required. People with symptoms, a positive test or exposure to someone with COVID-19 should refrain from attending classes.
