Nature Lab at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens
Level: Beginner to advanced. (An introduction to drawing and painting with watercolor will be included.)
Join watercolor artist Leslie Fehling for a look into the world of illustrated nature journaling. In this 4-week class, she’ll share inspiring examples from her own watercolor sketchbooks and offer ideas for creating a nature journal of your own. Then you’ll dive right in and construct an accordion-fold nature journal from watercolor paper and begin filling it with colorful sketches drawn on location at Phipps. Nature journaling offers a simple way to press the “Pause” button on our busy modern lives and reconnect with nature. It can help you to see your everyday world with new eyes.
Supplies needed, if not purchasing the kit:
- Half sheet of 22" x 30" 140 lb. cold-press watercolor paper
- Drawing tools (pencil and pen with waterproof ink, such as Pigma Micron 01 or Pitt Artist’s Pen, size S)

- Phipps Adult Education classes are for individuals 18 years of age and older. Minors over age 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is also a paid attendee of the class. Minors under age 16 are not permitted.
- Phipps reserves the right to substitute instructors when necessary.
- Mask and COVID-19 Policy: Masks are optional and welcome in Phipps classes when the CDC’s COVID-19 Community Level in Allegheny County is in “Low” (green) or “Medium” (yellow). You can check Allegheny County’s current status here. Masks will be required when the level is “High” (Red). People with symptoms, a positive test or exposure to someone with COVID-19 should refrain from attending classes.
- Receiving Class Credit: For both core and elective classes, students must attend all class sessions and complete and submit all the work required to earn class credit. Class credit is important if a student is pursuing the Basic or Advanced Botanical Art and Illustration certificate. Even if a student is not sure about pursuing the certificate, it is recommended that they earn credit for each class because this is difficult to do retroactively. If a student has to miss class (e.g. health reasons or a death in the family), they must contact the instructor at their earliest convenience to see if it’s possible to still earn class credit.
