Objective: To be able to sketch natural subjects using fine line and dip pens.
Level: Beginner to Advanced
Prerequisites: Botanical Drawing I and II, Pen and Ink I (or equivalent experience; contact Stephanie Lind slind@phipps.conservatory.org)
Relevant demos are recorded and made available to pre-registered students within 1 week of each class session. Videos will be viewable for one month from receipt.
Using botanical and natural history specimens found and collected on walks, vacations or in your garden, you will be creating a circular composition using pen and ink.
Circular compositions can help to present your chosen subjects in a dynamic way. Guidance will be given in how to create an effective composition so that your illustration will draw the viewer in and lead their eyes around the array of subjects.
The illustration process will start with structured drawing techniques alongside using fine line pens to develop form, texture and pattern through a range of mark-making options. As well as line and stipple, other mark-making techniques will be explored, particularly those that work well on cold pressed paper such as hatching and cross-hatching.
The first part of each session will be in a show and tell type format with time set aside for questions to be answered. The second part of the session will be dedicated to Sarah demonstrating 'live'. You will then work on your own illustrations in between each session, when you will also have the opportunity to watch a recording of the previous class in Google Classroom.
In between sessions Sarah will provide tutor support through Google Classroom where students will be able to ask for advice, interact with the rest of the class, share artwork in progress, access additional learning resources as well as recordings of each session. All students will be invited to Google Classroom prior to the start of class as is the custom with all of Phipps Botanical Art classes. Individual support cannot be given via email. - Phipps Adult Education classes are designed for individuals 18 years of age and older. Minors are permitted to attend online classes. Parents/guardians are welcome to sit in on class, but need to sign up separately to receive their own credit.
- Phipps reserves the right to substitute instructors when necessary.
- Receiving Class Credit: For both core and elective classes, students must attend all class sessions and complete and submit all the work required to earn class credit. Class credit is important if a student is pursuing the Basic or Advanced Botanical Art and Illustration certificate. Even if a student is not sure about pursuing the certificate, it is recommended that they earn credit for each class because this is difficult to do retroactively. If a student has to miss class (e.g. health reasons or a death in the family), they must contact the instructor at their earliest convenience to see if it’s possible to still earn class credit.
- A note on recordings: The class recordings posted on Google Classroom are meant to aid students in completing their work between classes but are not a substitute for attending class. Students are required to attend all classes and are not allowed to miss class and watch the recordings for credit.
