There are many tactics that professional horticulturists use to keep gardens healthy and looking their best. Learn the best practices for various gardening tasks from Phipps Outdoor Display Manager, Jess Horenstein. This course will cover deadheading, when to do it and why; as well as when to skip it all together. Other garden care methods such as proper garden clean up, mulching and weeding strategies will be covered. Learn ways to keep your garden healthy, beautiful and wildlife friendly.

$25 members and Sustainable Landcare accredited professionals | $30 nonmembers
Objective: Learn good garden maintenance strategies to keep you garden beautiful and wildlife friendly.
Level: Beginner
Prerequisites: none
This class is an elective in the Ecological Gardening certificate program.
Please plan to spend all of the class period outdoors walking and learning about plants. Dress appropriately for the weather, bring a water bottle and sunscreen if needed.
Instructor: Jessica Horenstein is the outdoor display manager at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens which is always an exciting endeavor. She has a passion for native plants. Recently she has become interested in plants that can withstand the ever-changing climatic patterns and is helping to build a database of climate resilient plants that can be used at Phipps and in the Pittsburgh region.
